Standard hotel rooms are often sized for two, and a “double” may not legally sleep four. Look for the stated maximum occupancy, triple/quad rooms, or “family rooms” — and never assume five people fit in one room. Two connecting rooms or an apartment is often the answer for larger families.
Hotel vs apartment vs ryokan
Business/city hotels are cheap, central and reliable but compact. Apartment-hotels (with a kitchenette and washer) suit longer stays, self-catering and bigger families. Ryokan are a wonderful cultural night — futons on tatami actually suit kids well — but check whether young children are welcome at the kaiseki dinner and whether private/family onsen options exist.
