Know before you go

Getting there: Kansai Airport (KIX) is the natural fly-in/out point for the region — about 50–75 min to central Osaka by the Nankai or JR Haruka trains. From Tokyo it’s roughly 2h30 by Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka.
Getting around: A dense subway and JR loop (the Osaka Loop Line) make getting around easy with an IC card. It’s flatter and more compact than Tokyo, which suits prams and tired legs.
Best time to visit: Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is hot and humid. Universal Studios and Dotonbori are busiest on weekends and Japanese holidays — a weekday visit is calmer.
With babies & toddlers: The Kaiyukan aquarium, Tempozan Ferris wheel and pool-friendly hotels suit little ones; Universal has toddler-friendly areas but is a long, tiring day. Osaka is an easy, forgiving city with kids.
With teenagers: Universal Studios Japan (Super Nintendo World, Harry Potter), Dotonbori’s neon and street food, and Den-Den Town for electronics/anime keep teens happy.
Eating with kids: Osaka is Japan’s street-food capital — takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and endless recognisable snacks in Dotonbori and Kuromon Market make it easy for fussy eaters.
The mistake to avoid: Scheduling Universal the day you arrive from Australia. It’s a full, exhausting day — give it a fresh day and keep the day either side light.

Universal Studios Japan is exhausting — allow a full day and consider Express passes for younger kids’ patience.
Osaka works well as your Kansai base for day trips to Kyoto (~15 min by Shinkansen) and Nara.
