Know before you go
- Getting there
- About 4 hours from Tokyo or roughly 1h40 from Shin-Osaka on the Sanyo Shinkansen — an easy add-on to a Kansai trip. Hiroshima Station connects to the city trams.
- Getting around
- Hiroshima’s streetcars (trams) are the simple, cheap way around, including to the Peace Park. For Miyajima, take a train or tram to Miyajimaguchi then a short ferry.
- Best time to visit
- Spring and autumn are most comfortable; summer is hot. The Peace Memorial Ceremony is on 6 August, when the city is busier and more solemn.
- With babies & toddlers
- Miyajima’s ferry, deer and easy shoreline suit little ones; the Peace Memorial Museum is confronting and better suited to older children. Balance the two across a day.
- With teenagers
- The Peace Memorial and Museum are powerful and educational for teenagers — a rare, meaningful stop. Miyajima adds a gentler counterweight.
- Eating with kids
- Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki (layered with noodles) is the local specialty and a fun, filling, kid-friendly meal; Miyajima is known for grilled oysters and momiji manju cakes.
- The mistake to avoid
- Taking young or sensitive children through the full museum unprepared. Read up first and decide what’s right for your kids — the outdoor memorial and Miyajima may be the better balance.
Practical family notes
- Consider your children’s ages and sensitivity before the Peace Memorial Museum; younger kids may find parts distressing.
- Pair with a Miyajima day trip — the ferry and deer are an easy win for all ages.
