Getting around Japan with children

Japan’s trains are a gift for families — once you know a few things.

The essentials

  • IC cards (Suica/ICOCA): tap on and off local trains — get one each, including kids.
  • Rail passes: the Japan Rail Pass only pays off for a lot of long-distance travel. For a city-focused family trip, individual tickets are often cheaper — the planner flags when a pass is worth it.
  • Reserved seats: on the Shinkansen, reserve seats together, and book the oversized-luggage spots in advance if you have big bags.
  • Luggage forwarding (takkyubin): send big suitcases hotel-to-hotel overnight and travel light with the kids. A game-changer for transfer days.
  • Peak hours: avoid commuter crush (~7:30–9:00am) with prams.
