Japan's oldest and largest museum, in Ueno Park. The regular galleries include a celebrated display of Japanese swords and samurai armour, with rotating National Treasures. Free for under-18s.

Why children love it: Real samurai swords, armour and helmets, plus haniwa clay figures — a walk through Japan's warrior history.
